About Franco Giannini The 11th International Symposium on Microwave and Optical Technology (ISMOT-2007) was successfully held in Villa Mondragone, Monte Porzio Catone, Italy from December 17-21, 2007. The research fields covered by ISMOT have been in the areas of microwave components and circuits, optical components and devices, microwave and optical communication systems, electromagnetic theory, antennas, microwave photonics, and all the major topics of interest to microwave and optical community Ernesto Limiti
All 186 contributions presented in the Symposium have been originated from active researchers disseminated all over the world, both from academia and industries, thus providing an international forum for exchanging new ideas, thoughts, and achievements in microwave and optical technologies.

On behalf of the Technical Program Committee of ISMOT-2007, it is our great pleasure and honour to announce the publication of the IJMOT Special Issue on selected ISMOT-2007 contributions. Papers which were accepted after review and presented during the ISMOT-2007 have been further reviewed by the TPC and session chairman/organisers. The authors of such selected papers have been asked to submit an extended version of their work for inclusion in the IJMOT Special Issue. On the basis of the IJMOT publication guidelines, we accepted a limited number of papers, representing a broad range of advanced topics in microwave and optical technology, and demonstrating the vitality of ISMOT-2007.

The contributions accepted for publications have been categorized into topics focusing on microwave and millimetre-wave technology, photonics, optical communications, antennas and electromagnetism.

We would like to express our gratitude to Prof. Banmali S. Rawat, Editor-in-Chief, for providing this issue of the IJMOT for ISMOT-2007 best papers. On this unique online journal for researchers in microwave and optical technologies, our research community will surely find a forum for closer interactions and fruitful contributions. We are indeed grateful to all the members of the ISMOT Technical Program Committee for their valuable review work and to all the special session organisers and chairpersons. In particular, the help of professors P. Colantonio, L. Scucchia and A. Serino is gratefully acknowledged.

Finally, our special thanks to the organizing committee of the ISMOT-2007 for their efforts devoted for the success of the event and the IJMOT management team for their support for the realization of this special issue.
